What Does Jesus Shout?

The Scriptures reveal that when Jesus descends from heaven, He does so with a shout:

1 Thessalonians 4:16“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.”

This shout is not an ordinary cry; it is a declaration of divine authority, one that shakes both heaven and earth. The pattern of this mighty voice shaking creation has been demonstrated before:

The Voice That Shakes the Earth

Hebrews 12:26“Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.”

When Jesus was crucified, He shouted, “It is finished”, and immediately the earth trembled, fulfilling the prophetic significance of His voice shaking creation.

The Crucifixion – A Foreshadow of the Final Shout

Let’s examine the order of events at the crucifixion:

  1. Matthew 27:50“Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.”
  2. Matthew 27:51“And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.”
  3. Matthew 27:52“And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose.”
  4. Matthew 27:53“And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.”

Jesus’ loud cry led to an earthquake, the opening of the graves, and the resurrection of the saints, who then entered the holy city. This sequence is a foreshadowing of the final shout, when He returns in power and glory.

The Future Shout – “It is Done!”

After the sixth bowl of wrath is poured out, Jesus declares:

Revelation 16:15“Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”

This indicates that at this point, He has not yet come but is about to. Then, after the seventh bowl is poured:

Revelation 16:17“And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.”

The Shaking of Heaven and Earth

When Jesus declared “It is finished” on the cross, there was an earthquake. When He declares “It is done” in Revelation, there is an even greater shaking:

Revelation 16:18“And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.”

Revelation 16:20“And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.”

This aligns with Nahum’s prophecy:

Nahum 1:5-6“The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.”

Who Can Stand?

The book of Hebrews echoes this judgment:

Hebrews 12:26-27“Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.”

Only those who belong to an unshakable kingdom will endure.

Hebrews 12:28-29“Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.”

Conclusion

Jesus’ shout is one of divine authority. When He shouted from the cross, it shook the earth and marked the beginning of victory over sin and death. When He shouts “It is done!” in Revelation, it will shake heaven and earth, signaling the final victory over all evil. Just as the saints arose at His first shout, so too will the faithful rise at His last. The question remains: Are we part of the kingdom that cannot be shaken?
